Discovery named it The Most Wonderful Week of the Year, and to that we say Aye, Aye Captain! It’s just good ol’ fashion fun.
It should be pretty obvious by now that The Mountain loves animals (if not go check out our Russo Rescue Collection, where a portion of proceeds from each tee is donated to Best Friends Animal Society), so it’s a natural fit for us to team up with Discovery to make a collection for an event that promotes the education of and protection of a misunderstood creature.
Let’s face it; Sharks aren’t winning any beauty pageants, in fact those teeth are downright nightmare-ish. They’ve been given a bad rep by overly dramatic movies/tv/media in general, but what Discovery has done over the last 28 years, is turn a scary beast, into a celebrated fascinating creature. Sure, there are still the people that think Jaws is a documentary, but for the most part people are loving (and even obsessing over) this animal on the same level as they would the adorable panda, or the awkward sloth.
The proof is in the social media pudding. Check out #SharkWeek on any social media platform, and you’ll see thousands upon thousands of humans wearing sharks, showing off their shark accessories, and having shark themed parties.
Shark Week is education as it should be: fun, interactive, and inclusive. Not only do you get jawesome shark themed tv specials, like Alien Sharks (seriously, what is up with that goblin shark), but you also can go to SharkWeek.com for extra goodies like a live shark cam, and an interactive history of prehistory sharks. Plus, pretty much everyone on the planet has Shark Week fever at this point, so you get schools of water-cooler topics.
Some may claim that Shark Week is overrated and way over hyped, but to that we say BOO! Shark Week is fun, and we love it, and after this weekend there’ll be a shark-bite-sized hole in our heart, that can’t and won’t be filled until next year. OH, WAIT. Just kidding, Discovery is awesome, and has promised us another chum-filled Shark Weekend in August. That should help with the withdrawals nicely.
