Butterflies are more than just a pretty face, or, in this case, more than just pretty wings. There’s a lot of substance and intrigue beneath that stained glass exterior. In honor of Learn About Butterflies day, here are The Mountain's favorite facts about the butterfly.
1. Butterflies Taste With Their Feet
It’s actually how they figure out where to lay their eggs. They land on a plant, and if it’s edible, then they know when their caterpillars hatch they’ll have something to eat.
2. Butterflies Drink Tears
This gives butterfly kisses a whole new (and slightly terrifying) meaning. So what’s the deal here? Butterflies need the sodium produced from the tears because salt isn’t prevalent in their normal nectar diet.
3. Your Dreams Are Delivered Via Butterfly
At least that’s what the Blackfoot tribe believes. A Blackfoot woman will embroider the symbol of the butterfly on a piece of buckskin then weave it into her baby’s hair when it is time for them to sleep. At the same time she will sing a lullaby asking the butterfly to bring sleep.
4. Monarch Butterflies Fly South for The Winter
Not all but some. If the butterfly is born in late summer it will fly to Mexico (some travel 5000 miles) for the winter, then return in the spring to the exact same tree it left.
5. Scientists Have Created a Cat/Butterfly Hybrid The Government Doesn’t Want You To Know About
Okay so this one isn’t exactly true, but wouldn’t it make a really great Syfy original?
